Description: | AM sings U K'ayil Barum 'Song of the Jaguar'. It is the same session as Jag_Song_AM. This one has video.
Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
AM sings U K'ayil Barum 'Song of the Jaguar'. This was video-recorded at the same time as Jag_Song_AM.imdi. The latter is audio only. The song was requested by the collectors. Before singing the song, AM explains what is it about and the purpose for singing it.
Lacandon and Spanish are used in this session.
AM is the primary speaker in this session. The collectors and the translator are present but do not take an active part in the speech event.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
AM is an elder in the community of Naha. He is respected for his knowledge of traditional Lacandón culture, and his knowledge of the traditional stories and ceremonial formulae. He is one of the few Lacandones who still practice the ancient Maya rituals. He is related to CK and his family by marriage. AM provides the bulk of the traditional rituals and stories for this corpus.
Jag_Song_AM.imdi: The session link below is the same session, only recorded on audio tape.
