Description:JK recites the spell, or "secret", of the yucca. The purpose is to record sekretos "spells".
Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
JK recites the spell, or "secret", of the yucca. The collector had asked for spells, or "secrets", as the Lacandones call these speech acts, which summon some kind of supernatural force to whatever it is they direct the power to. In this case, it is the yucca. Her niece, CNK, asked JK to recite Ah Ts'in. An explanation of this text is provided in Exp_Ahts7in_JK.
Lacandon is the language used in this session. Spanish is used minimally between CNK and the Collector.
JK is the principle contibutor in this session. KP, KM, and CNK can be heard reacting to the text. KMJKBr is present but is neither seen nor heard. He is not part of the session, nor does he show any interest in it. The only other person present is the Collector, who may be heard talking to CNK.
KM is CK Viejo's third and eldest living wife. She is the head of the household, by virtue of her seniority. She has borne ten children, all of whom are now adults and have long since moved out of the family household. She is adored by KP's grandchild, Lej. She has never left the village, except for the occasional trips to other surrounding villages, and the larger towns of Ocosingo and San Cristobal.
CNK is one of CK's daughters and the daughter of CK's third wife, KP. She was born in Naha and has lived there all her life. She still ives at home, as do most Lacandón girls before they marry (typically, at 14 years of age). She lives in a traditional household with two mothers and her unmarried siblings.
The collector of this session data is also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
KP was born and raised in Naha. She was brought into CK Viejo's household when she was five years old. She was raised by her co-wife KM. She and CK Viejo had ten children, some of whom still live on the family property. She has not ventured far from Naha.
JK was born in Naha. She is KM's sister, and lives with her brother.
KMJKBr was born and raised in Naha. He is the brother of KM and JK. He is single and lives with JK.
