| Lacandon Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandon(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandon culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc. | ||
| AM chants the Pokbil chant.The session begins with the collectors asking AM about the chant and its significance. AM explains that the chant is not very special, saying they are just "words" he speaks to this god pots as he gives them offerings. There is considerable speech overlap since the translations are simulatanous. AM then performs a chant he uses in context of pokbil när 'offering of corn'. | ||
| English, Spanish and Lacandon are used in this session. The chant is performed in Lacandon, while the translations are given in Spanish English. | ||
| AM, SK, and the collectors participate in this session. SK can be heard off camera translating the collectors questions for AM, while the collectors can be heard asking questions. AM provides a brief explanation of the pokbil and then chants a version of it. There is no one else present during the recording. | ||
| AM is an elder in the community of Naha. He is respected for his knowledge of traditional Lacandón culture, and his knowledge of the traditional stories and ceremonial formulae. He is one of the few Lacandones who still practice the ancient Maya rituals. He is related to CK and his family by marriage. AM provides the bulk of the traditional rituals and stories for this corpus. | ||
| SK is one of CK and KP's younger children. He was born in Naha and has lived there all his life. He still lives at home, with his new wife NI. He provides the bulk of the Lacandon-Spanish translations, and is present during many sessions recorded with AM. | ||
