Description:It'a a legend about the big pig Makai'anui from Hiva 'Oa which is going to be killed and eaten on Ua Pou island. In the legend there is a competition of 'mana', i.e. extraordinary powers, of two chiefs, one from Ua Pou, called Pa'etini, and, the other from Hiva Oa, called Akau'i. The 'mana' of the chief from Ua Pou, Pa'etini, declines because he cannot 'revive' meat on meatless bones. He is not able to nourish his tribe anymore, and ashamed by his lost of powers, he has to watch how the chief of Hiva Oa, Akau'i, nourishes his own people from Ua Pou by sacrifying his pig Makai'anui.
The project documents several different aspects of the Marquesan culture (legends, narratives, food preparation, plant medicine, fishing techniques, Marquesan trick languages, songs, dances etc.)
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". MRQ (=North Marquesan) is spoken on the north-western part of the Marquesan archipelago in French Polynesia; MRQ is an Oceanic language belonging to the Austronesian language family; within Eastern-Oceanic it belong to the Proto-Eastern-Central subgroup of Proto-Eastern Polynesian (Pawley 1966; Green 1966) ; MRQ is most closely related to South Marquesan, Hawaiían and Mangarevan forming the Proto Marquesic subgroup which is distinguished from Proto Tahitic (e.g. Tahitian, Tuamotuan, Rarotongan); the Marquesan archipelago has approx. 8000 inhabitants; most speakers of Marquesan are French-Marquesan bilinguals; language of instruction in schools is French; in the most urbanised areas of the Marquesas (Taiohaé, Hakahau, Atuona) where 70% of the population lives, most children under age 15 have acquired French as their first language;
B is fluent in French and Tahitian, also some good basic knowledge of English. He was brought up in the valley of Hakata'o on 'Ua Pou island; until the age of nine he did not attend a school as there were no schools in his valley. He learnt a lot of legends from his grandparents and older people of his valley. When he was a child there was no electricity (ie. TV or radio), and thus story-telling was one of the major attractions during their spare time. He is a primary school teacher.
former Ph.D-student at the MPI for Psycholinguistics at the language acquisition section (W.Klein); four field trips to North Marquesas islands (Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou) collecting adult as well as child data
