Description:AM narrates a traditional story. The purpose for this session is to record traditional Lacandón narratives. The recording was made in AM's god house, which is a palapa-like structure without walls. Filming conditions included some wind, and the scudding clouds caused some light exposure problems.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. the project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'Unspecified', Discursive = 'Unspecified', Performance = 'narrative'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
Lacandón is the language used in the verbal task. Spanish is used to explain the the verbal events, add information on the content, its source, history and other information relevant to the verbal task. It is also used as the language of translation.
AM is the only participant in this session.
AM was the only participant in this session. He is an elder in the community of Naha. He is respected for his knowledge of traditional Lacandón culture, and his knowledge of the traditional stories and ceremonial formulae. He is one of the few Lacandónes who still practice the ancient Maya rituals. He is related to CK viejo and his family by marriage. AM provides the bulk of the traditional rituals and stories for this corpus.
The collectors of this actual session are also responsbile for the collection of all of the session data and the project as a whole.
