Description: | This lunch time sequence in the Kohs' kitchen was spontaneous. The Kohs and their children and grandchildren permitted Cook to film this sequence, which continued after the tape had run out. It gives a general idea of daily Lacandón life in a traditional extended family household.
Lacandón Cultural Heritage is a documentation of the language and culture of the northern Lacandón(Maya), who live in the rain forest in Chiapas, the south-eastern state of Mexico. They number approximately 350 men, women and children, who have retained much of their traditional traditional culture and religion. The project serves as a preservative measure against loss of the traditional knowledge, stories, and verbal performances that are central to Lacandón culture. It also serves as an interactive resource tool for linguists and non-linguists to access data relevant to their areas of interest, such as folklore, ethnobotany, cultural anthropology, etc.
This file was generated from an IMDI 1.9 file and transformed to IMDI 3.0. The substructure of Genre is replaced by two elements named "Genre" and "SubGenre". The original content of Genre substructure was: Interactional = 'conversation', Discursive = 'Unspecified', Performance = 'Unspecified'. These values have been added as Keys to the Content information.
Lunch time at Kohs' is a spontaneous event in which the immediate family members are cooking and eating lunch. They were aware of our recording this sequence, but carried on as if we were invisible. We recorded this session for a sample of family life and a smaple of spontaneous conversation.
CNK is one of CK's daughters and the daughter of CK's third wife, KM. She was born in Naha and has lived there all her life. She still ives at home, as do most Lacandón girls before they marry (typically, at 14 years of age). She lives in a tradiitional household with more than mother and, her unmarried siblings, and young neice and nephew. She has helped with the transcription and translation of the text of this performance.
CHX is the youngest daughter of CK Viejo and KP. She was born in Naha and has lived there all her life. She still lives at home and helps out with the bulk of household chores
KM is CK Viejo's third wife, and eldest living wife. She is the head of the household, perhaps by virtue of her seniority. She has borne many children, all of whom are now adults and have long since moved out of the family household. She is adored by KP's grandchild, Alejandro.
Patricio is the youngest child, of CK Viejo and KP.
KP is the youngest wife of CK Viejo's four wives. She has borne 10 children , four of whom still live with her in the family household.
The collectors of this session data are also responsbile for the collection of all of the data sessions and the whole project.
