Description:		r02_v1 r02_v3 r02-v4 These three tapes are a complete record of the Kpaakpaa for Thomas Temkwe (Témikpé), Nkomo clan, baptized in 1949, at an estimated age of 17. He served the Mission in Moresby as cook for many decades. He died Tuesday noon, after an attack of diarhrea which has been going around Rossel which hit him on Sunday (I saw him fishing happily on Saturday, in the Ch:eme river poisoning party). Buried Wednesday – I went late to pay respects to his brother Joseph Woyipa (baptized 1940, estimated age 17). The Kpaakpaa held just 4 days later was not well attended, partly because it was set too soon after the death, partly because it was a Saturday (not normal), partly because Thomas had no family and had only returned from Moresby about 4 years ago after 30 years away – just representatives from P:uupaa, Ch:eme and Yamayu areas. Main speakers: John Lamonga, John Wéni, Woyipa, Y:emwe, Elami, etc. Main points concerned: 1. Why did the Yamu yu local party arrive later than anyone? 2. Why held on a Staurday? 3. Why was no-one told he was ill 4. Why did Woyipa not protect him more closely, given that he had been away so long he was defenceless against sorcery Camera angles constantly changing, but Lamonga’s group is sitting to the North, and the P:uupaa lot (with Wéni in red) to the South. Not well filmed due to flies and fatigue. Shell money transaction on V3. The Kmiyé clan, his W’s, should have been there in force to repay the chomos Nkomo clan had given on her death. Should have been more than the 6. But she died 1977, and the elders who knew where the chomos went have since died. Y refused to put one, despite Kmiyé wife, because he was in Ukurampa at the time, so never received one. None of the chomos went for good, were to be redeemed later, because noone remembered receiving one for good. Nor did the popokéni. Distributor must be Nkomo, like Aloutious Kmatpi, and William Wuta (Dyodo), Thomas’s MZS. The toko is given at c.54 mins. Ist line to right is kpêché u kpââ (put by Daa clan), the third line is yuu y:eemî u kpââ (Nkomo puts this one) – these are then exchanged, rank by rank. The line in middle is toko, put by Kmiyé clan, the real payment to Nkomo which goes for good. The rest of the 10s went to grave diggers + 2 kina each – 14 diggers.
