| Description: | We are in the remote Barangay Villa (in the Aurora Memorial National Park) and Pepito Dandan explains how they make sweeps, while his neighbour Jovito is demonstrating. As this was the first video we recorded there, it attracted the attention of locals, who often appear in the scene or produce background noise. We decide, however, to archive this video, given the cultural information that it contains. Pepito describes himself as a community elder and states that one of their sources of income is selling sweeps. While Pepito describes how they get the materials that they use, a third man appears on the scene and starts talking, the barangay chieftain Lorenzo. Lorenzo is Pepito’s son and explains that their parents have been working with sweeps for a long time. Pepito explains that back in the days it was easier for them to hunt, as there were plenty of animals in the nearby forest but the situation quickly changed after the arrival of the logging companies, during the seventies. Lorenzo explains that they do they have stopped fishing with goggles in the nearby river given that as consequence of electric fishing the river is getting empty of fishes. | |
