Description: | Phonological neighborhood density (i.e., the sum of all word form neighbors in the mental lexicon) is known to influence lexical access and speech production as well as perception processes. Lexical competition is thought to be the central concept from which the neighborhood effect emanates: highly competitive neighborhoods (i.e., those with many constituent words) are characterized by large degrees of phonemic co-activation, which can delay or facilitate speech recognition and production. Numerous studies have described the development of novel phonetic features as mechanisms for words to gain a competitive advantage and accrue activation within a phonological neighborhood. The present study investigates the advancement of phonetic learning of plosive consonants in English as a second language in relation to neighborhood density to see whether dense or sparse neighborhoods are more conducive to the incorporation of novel phonetic detail. In addition, the effect of minimal pairs on neighborhood competition is explored, as well as the difference between experimentally elicited and spontaneous conversational speech. Results indicate that sparser neighborhoods with weaker competition show the furthest advancement of phonetic learning; the presence of a minimal pair also affected neighborhood acoustics. Our data suggests that lexical competition plays a defining role in the dissemination of phonetic updates in the lexicon of second language learners. | |
